A Week in Rome

The thing I love about traveling is that it is completely unexpected, unscripted. There is no guaranteed outcome and what you get is never what you expect. Termini was very unexpected. We looked outside the bus eagerly, trying to absorb the vibrant energy and peculiar cityscape. In Rome, it seemed (or at least it seemed from the bus), the ancient wove in with the new. Right in front of me I could see Roman walls, ruined, crumbling, and being absorbed by plants, as a simple background to a busy road full of colorful mopeds and little Fiats. It was beautiful. Just imagine something older than the entire United States and built something just a few hundred years after Christ falling into a background??? That is unfathomable in the US. Here 300 years is ancient, to Europeans that is nothing. That's another thing I love about the world. Being able to touch and see so many ancient things that you wouldn't be able to otherwise if you just stayed in a small, tucked away American city the rest of your life. Most people won't appreciate it, but to us it is amazing. To be able to imagine all the people before us and the legacy that is humanity. To see how far we have come. That is true beauty. And I didn't even have to get off the bus to admire the Aurelian Walls. Anyways, back to the main point: Termini. So, Termini Station is Rome's main and largest train station, situated just a few miles away from the Coliseum. The area itself is quite nice but walk along the street past the internal shopping center at the station and I would be lying if I told you it was as nice as the rest of Rome or that it would meet your expectations of a street in the eternal city. It was a very dirty area with closed down shops and worn down streets. Graffiti covered everywhere and even a few unfortunate vans who had extended their stay on the street. This was a New York street to me, nothing to be with Rome. Unfortunately for us, we had to roll our suitcases all the way down the gray (although I am sure that is not the original color) cobblestone path. There was no one around but a few locals, who turned out be very helpful in helping us find the hotel and as we went down the street, the walls of the train station blended seamlessly into the Aurelian wall landscape once again. Here's a few pics of Termini by the way:
