DAY 1

Mar 18 2018

3 mountains in 1 day -- sounds challenging? It is. 3 times the challenge and 3 times worth of breath taking views.

Meet up is at Cubao around 2am. From Cubao we rode a van going to Montalban, Rizal. I think it was an hour or 2 drive. Once there, we were divided in to 2 groups, those who will do the trilogy (3 mountains) and thos who will only do 2.

We started around 4am. For our first mountain -- Mt. Binacayan.

Mt. Binacayan
Major jumpoff: Brgy. Wawa, Rodriguez, Rizal
LLA (Binacayan): 14°43′30.5′′N 121°11′26.1′′ E ; 424 MASL
Days required / Hours to summit: 1 day / 2-3 hours (B)
Specs: Minor, Difficulty 3/9 / Trail class 1-4
Features: Limestone formations, scenic views of Sierra Madre and Rizal province

It's my 2nd time climbing Binacayan and the trail kind changed (based on my memory). It was less rocky. As per ate guide, who was a trail runner, this is a different trail. We reached the summit by 7am, and because there are many people who hiked, we waited for a while to get our pictures at the summit.

MT. HAPUNANG BANOI
Major jumpoff: Brgy. Wawa, Rodriguez, Rizal
LLA: 14°44′25.3′′ N, 121°11′30.4′ 517 MASL (+460m)
Days required / Hours to summit: 1 day / 2-3.5 hours
Specs: Minor, Difficulty 4/9, Trail class 1-4 with limestone scrambling
Features: Limestone formations, scenic views of Sierra Madre and Rizal province

2nd mountain -- Mt. Hapunang Banoi, a mountain conjoined with Mt. Pamitinan. Banoi is a tagalog word for eagle. They say that this mountain is named because of the belief that this is where the eagles dine. There are a few mountains that are actually named Banoi -- Mt. Banoi in Batangas and Mt. Tukduan Banoi in Rizal.

After going down Binacayan, we went up a rocky trail until we reached the junction. At the junction, there are stores selling refreshments, food, and souvenir shirts. From there, the trail is divided in to two, left going to Hapunang Banoi and right going to Pamitinan.

The trail of Hapunang Banoi consists of bamboo groves and limestones. By that time, one of our friend is already having a difficulty, cramps!! Few rests here and there and he managed to continue. After a few hours of walking and scrambling, we reached the summit with it's view of the neighboring mountains.

MTS. PAMITINAN
Rodriguez, Rizal
Major jumpoff: Brgy. Wawa, Rodriguez, Rizal
LLA (Pamitinan): 14°43′51.7′′N 121°11′29.2′′ E 426 MASL
Days required / Hours to summit: 1 day / 1.5-3 hours
Specs: Minor, Difficulty 3/9
Features: Limestone formations, scenic views of Sierra Madre and Rizal province

3rd mountain -- Mt. Pamitinan. This has a more established trail and somewhat challenging for beggibers and will find it enjoyable for the rock climbing enthusiasts.

Passing through the forest, we reached the top and in order for us to reach the summit, we had to use a rope and our spiderman ability. Upon reaching the top, we had to be very extra careful to maintain or balance.

Unfortunately though, one of our friends didnt make it to the last mountain due to cramps. 😔

After almost 12 hrs and 3 mountains conquered, the unexpected happened. Our friend who is suffering from cramps had to be rescued from the junction going down to the jump off. Many thanks to the guides of Rodriguez who were all very helpful and attentive. And thanks to Mr. Ged who brought us to the hospital and shouldered the expenses. 🙂

The entire experience was great inspite of the emergency. It was a test of endurance and no one gave up.

We left Montalban around 7pm with the van provided by Mr. Ged and arrived Manila around 10ish.
