DAY 1Sep 11 2018
Albergue S. Tiago de Labruge
left the Best Guest Hostel at 6:30am and headed down to the river to pick up the Camino trail. the sun rise was amazing and the colours of the city beautiful. we followed the river out to the ocean and then the trail took us all the way down the coast. we stopped in for a coffee and pastry just outside Porto at a local garage and then for lunch at Matosinhos. very hot day with little shade along the coast so we were glad to reach our destination, a lovely converted school house. showered, clothes washed, then of to find a cold beer. the local bar was full of the local women, and the owner spoke no English but made us feel welcome and had a laugh with us. the Portuguese are very helpful. as we passed the fish markets, an old lady crossed the road yelling at us, but was trying to make sure we knew the way to the bridge, which was a bit tricky. then later we decided to go off route, and as soon as we left the trail and crossed the road, a guy pulled up in his car telling us we were going the wrong way. he was really nice. all a bit sore, the kids more than me, lol. early night, with a slower day tomorrow.
DAY 2Sep 12 2018
Vila do Conde
day 2 was a shorter, only 10km, which was lucky, as we were all feeling the previous days 24km. didn't leave till 8am and walked slowly at first, back down to the sea, along more boardwalks. stopped in for the now usual espresso and Portuguese tart for breakfast. i could eat a dozen of them. more boardwalk and very hot sun until we arrived at Vila do Conde around 12. the Albergue didn't open till 3pm so we stopped in for a beer and our first pilgrim meal, which was very tasty sardines. while sitting there a lady came up and introduced herself, she ran the Albergue. she told us to come and check in, leave our bags, and go back and enjoy lunch. love the Portuguese! time now to chill and probably head to the beach for a swim.
DAY 3Sep 13 2018
Vila do Conde
left this morning in a thick fog at 6am. made our way out of town, off the coastal route and heading for the central route. passing through small farming villages, fields of corn and grapes, along cobblestone roads and old stone walls. was a pleasant change from the coast. stopped for coffee at a local bar and we arrived in Sao Pedro de Rates around 11am. cafe across the road from the Albergue served a nice lunch.
DAY 4Sep 14 2018
left de Rates around 6am in the cool of the foggy morning. we decided to push through Barcelos to Tamel, at just over 26km. The morning was great with plenty of shade and nice but the last 8-10 km were uphill on roads wilt little or no shade. arrived at the Albergue with plenty of time for a drink and to meet up with new friends.
DAY 5Sep 15 2018
Ponte de Lima
Early start today, 5:45am. Trying to get down the road before the heat really kicks in. Mostly downhill today through small towns and valleys. No real stops today, which saw us cover 25km by 12 noon. Feet are getting bashed about a bit with 2 more blisters today about the size of a 10 cent piece. The Albergue didn't open till 4pm so all the backpacks are lined up in an orderly fashion. Went for a swim in the river which was just what we needed.
DAY 6Sep 16 2018
Ponte de Lima
left ponte de lima at 6am for a day of hill climbs. today we decided on a lot of stops and to go hard on the flat then easy on the hills. everyone had a great nights sleep, and we set out really well. the path was mostly through the forest with lots of shade and plenty of water springs. the climb was tough but we all powered through. arrived at our albergue just before opening and secured a bed. resting now in the garden with a cold beer.
DAY 7Sep 17 2018
our last day in Portugal. we left later today at 7:30 am. most of the other 31 pilgrims in our room were up at 4:45am. a small climb then a fairly easy 20kms mainly on cobblestone paths which are hard on the body. stopped for coffee and breaks as the heat was harsh. walked across the border around 12 (1pm in Spain). went straight to our hostel, showered and went out for a great pilgrim meal. i stopped at a local bar for a beer and to update my photos then meet up with old Camino friends and went out for dinner. weather is still stunning. forgot how much I love Spain.
DAY 8Sep 18 2018
7am start out of Tui across farms and forests. Followed streams and rivers most of the day. 19km today, weather was a bit cooler as well. Nice new Albergue, bordering on luxury, doona and quiet rooms. Out for one of the best tapas yet.
DAY 9Sep 19 2018
23km today. We left Porrino at about 7am 50/50 road and forest trails today, a few very steep hills included. Lunch in Redondela then on to Arcade. Our Albergue is cute with a lovely host, not far from the coast.
DAY 10Sep 20 2018
A late start and a short walk today (recovery day). 9am start after a good long sleep and only 12km to walk. It was mostly uphill so all was not easy. Arrived around 12 and after lunch spent the afternoon lying on the bed sleeping/chilling.
