DAY 1

Jan 12 2017

After our trip to Iceland last January, the cousins knew we wanted to take another winter trip this year. Around Labor Day, Wow Airlines had a sale and Stockholm was the cheapest destination of places none of us had been before. The tickets were about $300 from Baltimore so it was a steal. 😌

We found another deal on Wow Air, this time to Sweden. The tickets were about $340.

DAY 2

Jan 13 2017

From the Airport, we took about a 30 minute taxi ride to our Airbnb, in Södermalm, an island in the southern part of the city.

We arrived in Sweden around noon and then took an Uber from the airport to our Airbnb in Södermalm.

After we got settled in the apartment, we walked about two miles to Gamla Stan, or "Old Town," via Slussen. Slussen is the major hub of transportation in Stockholm where several train, subway, ferries, highways, and bridges meet.

Gamla Stan is a small island in the center of the city and is where Stockholm was originally settled in the 13th century. The Old Town still maintains its mostly car-free, medieval street plan of cobblestone streets and alleyways, and the medieval architecture.

We were looking for this square in order to photograph the iconic buildings in the background. However, the first time around, we walked into the square from between the orange and red buildings. We never turned around so never realized we were ‘there.’ We kept walking through the square and made a wide circle in the connecting streets until we made our way back and realized our mistake.

After checking or Stortorget Square and Gamla Stan, we took an Uber to the Vasa Museum.

The Vasa Museum houses the Vasa, the only preserved seventeenth-century ship in the world. The warship sank on its maiden voyage in the middle of Stockholm Harbor in 1628. The unique clay and silt at the bottom of the harbor semi-preserved the ship and it was salvaged 333 years later in 1961. Since then it has been restored to its almost original state.

Dinner was at Taco Bar, a popular Mexican chain in Sweden. We were trying to find a place with Swedish meatballs but we succumbed to hunger and couldn't keep passing up tacos whenever we passed one. The taco salad and margaritas were actually really good!

DAY 3

Jan 14 2017

The next morning, we all accidentally slept til about 10, for some reason the time change was affecting us all a lot this time. We scrambled to get ourselves together, grabbed coffee and then took and Uber to the Royal Palace for the changing of the guard.

We got there a little early so we wandered around Gamla Stan a little more and picked up some souvenirs.

After the Changing of the Guard we Uber'd Drottningholm Palace. While Royal Palace is the official home of the Swedish Royal Family, the Family actually lives in their 'summer palace,' Drottningholm, which is considered Sweden's version of Versailles.

The first stop on our road trip was Sigtuna. We read about the town online while looking for places to visit Lake Malaren in the country. This town also came with an intact medieval village and Viking ruins.

When we got to Sigtuna, we drove down to the lake where tons of people were our hiking, skating, and playing hockey on the ice. We walked out a ways and then we started hearing cracking noises, which made us run back to the shore. All the locals thought it was really funny (the cracking sounds are normal).

Next stop was Uppsala, a city about two hours north of Stockholm. Uppsala is a university town with universities, as well as the center of the Church of Sweden.

Last stop was Täby to see the Viking Causeway and The Viking Runestones.
